Do most public places have hidden cameras nowadays, even locker rooms & bathrooms?
No. Those are still areas where people have a legitimate expectation of privacy, whether they are on public or private property.
Is the school allowed to put security cameras in the bathroom?

not to many locker and bath rooms (but there are some)
but many many place’s have hidden and pubic cameras

In the United Kingdom it is against the law to site covert cameras in locker rooms and bathrooms with a RIPA being in force.
CCTV is not under RIPA (because it is not covert or directed), however the use of CCTV is governed quite strictly and could not be used generally in locker rooms or bathrooms unless a clear case of employee or abuse was identified, and then it would have been justified.
Use of covert techniques has to be Justified, Authorised, Proportionate, Auditable, and Necessary (JAPAN),
or
Proportionate, Legal, Authorised, and Necessary (PLAN).
It would be deemed a breach of the Human Rights Act 1988 (article 8 – the right to a private life) to site such a camera in a locker room or bathroom without the above (JAPAN) being in force.
